Yurts & Teepees

Cool camping, sleep under the stairs and enjoy eating around a campfireThe Yurt or Ger as it is known in Mongolia keeps the locals warm at minus 40 and cool in the summer’s baking heat. It’s not the Gobi, but the Yurts are just as functional here and they have become quite the rage. When you’re tired of the same old 5 star hotel its time to try a wool lined Yurt! It can sleep 10 and costs £500 for the whole weekend. Teepees are great for parties and camping out too. Prices start from £250 for a weekend.

Hen parties enjoy their last days of freedom in the Gower WildernessWe recommend you only camp at official, council approved, sites on Gower. Please do not camp illegally!

Cool Camping for Hen Parties, Children and Families.

"Luxurious new tent designs, eco-friendly urges and celebrity endorsements are all pushing Britons to find a field of their own", says Mark Palmer in a recent feature in The Daily Telegraph.

I love Laura James new book called "Cool Camping". The images are beautiful and she makes camping sound chic, romantic and a lot of fun.

Since it was published, we have noticed a surge in enquires from people wanting to stay in our tee-pees and yurts by the sea. We have had over 245 enquiries from hen parties since June 06, wanting to come and take part in our and Green Organic and Hen Party Pampering Weekends on the beach. We are also taking bookings for people who want to take part in Food Foraging Courses in the wilderness in Autumn .... Others are taking part in our Wild and Wet activity weekends. Some people even want to come Camping and Walking at Christmas when they can have the beach and driftwood to themselves. (Bring woolly socks!)

We are very grateful to Laura James and all the other journalists, this summer who have made camping cool. They are helping to bring together fragmented, busy families around the camp fire and they are now eating, talking and playing together for the first time in years.

A few years ago, everyone laughed and thought people who went camping were "sad" and poor. Why, they asked would anyone in their right mind, want to come and camp in South Wales, when they could fly somewhere really exciting at weekends?

But now, it seems going abroad is not what it was cracked up to be. For a start everyone has been everywhere they want to go.

Fighting for a place on a cheap airlines, suffering delays and loosing your luggage is also a bit tedious and after a while it just seems easier to stay at home. Who wants to come home, feeling more stressed than they left? And who can really afford to pay to park at Heathrow airport anyway? I think most people come home, feeling ill too since they stopped pumping fresh air around the cabins.

People are turning their backs on weekends abroad in their droves. Isn't it easier just to pack a tent, get in you car, drive at your own pace and turn up somewhere really beautiful, a few hours later? It takes three hours to get here from London and it's a different world.

Camping is cool. 1.2 million people in Britain will this year, spend their holidays under canvas. It's a great escape from the school run, the PlayStation, piano practice, homework and tv. At the same time, for many parents it represents a nostalgic reminder of gentler, more simple times - and a chance to share that with their own children.

"Our children have different child hoods to ours," says Laura James. "We know where they are every single minute of the day and we're frightened to let hem out of our sight. Camping is different. It gives the whole family a taste of freedom. It teaches you to live with less. But one of the main attractions today is that you can do it all in style.

This is true. Last year, Millets and Cath Kidston got into "bed together" and created a tent using her iconic floral design, and this year you can buy hammocks, beach shelters, ponchos, umbrellas (although the Welsh Tourist board don't want you to know that it rains here!) And windshields.

Ted Baker has also produced some funky tents - flying ducks on a rose wallpaper and a stag's head set against a 1970s retro bamboo print, will frighten the sheep!

Camping is also is becoming a fashion statement - And being muddy is suddenly sexy and cool. Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Damian Lewis are showing us how to look great in grubby boots and now even my bank manager adopts the grunge look at the Glastonbury festival. Cool camping is not just for children but for everyone with their finger on the pulse.

Everyone is escaping and the freedom camping brings is a big attraction - There is really something lovely about sitting around a camp fire, telling stories and eating organic food on the beach. What is more romantic than going to sleep under the stars in a tee-pee?

We are running bushcrafting and cool camping weekends, 52 weeks a year for hen parties, families and everyone else. Please ring us for more info.
